Top Nigerian musical artists, Banky W. and Wizkid are set to star in new seven-part Kenyan drama series “Shuga: Love, Sex, Money” which will debut next month (video promo below). The hitmakers will not be taking on any roles in the anticipated series, but will be making cameo appearances in the club scenes, a press release from the series’ producer stated.

Gorgeous singers aside, the series has perked the interests of viewers, and with love, sex and money involved that is no surprise. However, that’s just on the surface of the sexy drama. Dig in and you get to the deeper issues being explored in the series.

Produced by MTV Networks Africa, in association with the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, PEPFAR and the Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation (HFG), Shuga: Love, Sex, Money was conceived in order to spread the message of responsible sexual behaviour and tolerance, the statement reads.

It is described as “a brutally honest account of emotional relationships among Kenyan youth”, exploring issues of rape, prostitution and homosexuality.

Shuga was shot on location in Nairobi and Malindi and stars Kenyan actress Nancy Wanjiku Karanja, 24, in a key storyline about rape, as her character, Baby, is assaulted by a trusted older relative.

Other themes playing out against the background of Kenya’s clubs, bars, hangouts and ghettoes include transactional sex and male homosexuality.

Banky W. and Wizkid, who will be seen performing during emotionally hard-hitting club scenes, aren’t the only musical acts on Shuga. Kenya-based Nigerian musician Ikubese Emmanuel – a.k.a.9con – gets an acting role on the series, playing the character Femi.

The series producer say the show will be offered rights-free to other broadcasters around the world in order to spread its message about responsible sexual behaviour and tolerance, the statement said.

Shuga: Love, Sex, Money will have its red carpet premiere on 10 February 2012 and debuts on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) from Tuesday 14 February. Check out the trailer below:
