Nigeria: Bishop Calls For Buhari’s Arrest Over 2015 Comment

Buhari The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most. Rev. Felix Ajakaye, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the arrest and prosecution of former Head of State, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for making unguarded statements.

The bishop said this in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday in an interview with journalists.

He said the security agents ought to have arrested Buhari for threatening that there would be bloodshed in the country if the 2015 was rigged.

According to him, rather than trading words with the retired general, the Presient ought to have asked law enforcement agencies to prosecute him for threatening the peace of the nation.

The cleric said Buhari, the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 elections, should not be allowed to destabilise the country because he wants to rule at all costs.

He stated that the likes of Buhari had loyalists who could translate such comments into actions, saying they should not be allowed to turn the country to a theatre of war.

Ajakaye said the nation was going through a trying time, adding that such inflammatory comment could worsen the already bad security situation in the country.

He said, “Nigeria belongs to all of us and we have no other place to go and we should watch our utterances, no matter our status. We are in a very trying time and we need to be prayerful and work.

“We need to be positive and concrete in our thoughts and work our thoughts. It is unfortunate and unacceptable for a person like Maj.-Gen. Buhari to have mentioned that Nigeria would be bloody in 2015.

“I don’t know what our security agents are still waiting for. They should be decisive no matter whose ox is gored. If another person had made such a statement, they would say he was planning something against the country.

“But for making such a statement I will say that seems to be his character and we should not allow him and others to be saying that anymore, the laws are there.”

It is unfortunate that ethnicity and religious bigotry has eaten deep into many nigerians such that we cannot differentiate issues from persons. For many however learned are not educated. Fighting for ethnic group or religion is a mad person’s approach to issues affecting humanity. Let us love human beings, work to promote humanity rather than sections. I believe bishop ajakaye stands for the wellbeing of human beings in nigeria. Hence, those calling for the destruction of human lives because of elections do not mean well for nigerians. If you are not satisfied with results , civilized people go to court as some have done. No more killings because of pechance for governance.

Can we all get along. These comments does not help to solve the problems of Nigeria. Rather they help to divide the country. Buhari, if you become the president of the country again, Would you want to preside over a divided Nigeria? In case you don’t think about it, your cabinet is not going to be supreme military council. You are not allowed to rule by decrees. In the name of justice and fair play, those of you who ruled Nigeria before should not be allowed to come near the sit of power. Judging from the records of other military rulers before and after you, you all should step aside to let enlightened people decide the fate of Nigeria.
