Jonathan Seeks Senate Approval To Rename UNILAG, 2 Others

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday submitted a Bill seeking to formalize the change of name of University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos to the Senate.

In a letter sent to the Senate today and read by the Senate President at the commencement of Plenary, the President is asking for approval to rename Federal University of Technology Umudike to Michael Okpara University Umudike; Federal Univeristy of Technology Yola to Modibbo Adama University and University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos.

Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike was renamed in 2000 under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo while Federal University of Technology, Yola was renamed on October 1, 2011.

UNILAG Students had embarked on a massive protest after the President’s announcement on May 29 of the renaming of the university.

The public were not left out as majority disapproved of the president’s actions revealing that the nation had more pressing issues to deal with than the renaming of a university and the unrest that stemmed as a result of it.
