Ethiopian Defar Wins Women’s Olympic 5000m Gold

LONDON (AFP) – Ethiopian Meseret Defar won the women’s Olympic 5000m gold on Friday.

Defar, who also won the 5000m at the Athens Games in 2004, timed 15min 04.25sec, with world champion Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya claiming silver in 15:04.73.

Defending Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba, also of Ethiopia, took bronze in 15:05.15.

  2. That was a brilliant run and win for East Africans.Thats what we are famous for and i can’t help but be happy that we were not upstaged by the Russians and Ukranians.Meseret was so emotional.Vivian made my night
