A married pastor has been arrested and charged with prostitution in Texas, police say.

Eddie Hilburn, a pastor at The Woodlands First Baptist Church, was arrested on Wednesday by the Harris County Sheriff's Office after he paid an undercover sheriff's deputy $80 for sexual activities, KTRK reported.

The 52-year-old father-of-three appeared in court Thursday morning hours after he had been arrested in a hotel.

Hilburn resigned from his position as an associate pastor at the church on Friday.

He started that position at the church back in 2012, and had previously worked at other churches in both Texas and Wisconsin, according to the church's website.

A statement from officials at the church released on Friday confirmed that Hilburn had resigned.

'In regard to the recent arrest of Dr. Eddie Hilburn, The Woodlands First Baptist Church has received and accepted his resignation and has taken steps to notify the congregation,' the statement reads.

'This is a difficult time for Eddie, his family and our church.

'We continue to seek God's will with grace and truth, providing love and support to all those affected, while reaffirming our commitment to the highest expectations for our church and its leadership.’

Hilburn met his wife, Lisa, while attending East Texas Baptist University. He went on to earn a Masters of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

While serving as associate pastor at The Woodlands First Baptist Church, he coached other staff members 'as they live out their calling,' according to the church's website.
