The students appeared before the panel on Tuesday to answer questions on why they put on dresses that contravene the university’s dress code, Daily Trust gathered.

The affected students that cut across different faculties of the university were, two weeks ago, served with summon letter to appear before the panel.

It was gathered that the erring students who were mostly female pleaded guilty of flouting the university’s regulations on dress code before the panel, and that they were asked to sign an undertaking not to repeat the offence.

“Being first offenders, the university was magnanimous enough to pardon them consequent upon their promise to comply with the dress code”, said an official of the university who pleaded anonymity.

The source added, “Unilorin has a dress code and as a university, we don’t make mess of our policy. So, this dress code is a continuous thing to ensure regular compliance of students”.

Speaking with Daily Trust, the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs of the university, Mr. Kunle Akogun, said the exercise is routine “to check unruly behaviour and maintain the university standard”.

During the photo shoot, the 31-year-old tennis star also posed for pics in different dresses.

“It was really hard for me to turn 30,” Serena told a Tennis publication recently. “I really struggled, and I was just like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I don’t know why, but that’s what kind of came out of it. I have come to turns with being over 30 now, but getting there was really hard!” – Justjared

11. Do not share your best friend’s personal life with every Tom, Dick and Harry.

12. Women should never act on distress in relationships like checking your man’s phone, nagging him to death, and acting like a paranoid freak. You will simply release him to someone else by doing so.

13. Never dish out your entire family drama on a first date. The guy just wants to know about you.

14. Stop obsessing over your body. It’s good to eat healthy and work out but let’s leave it at that.

15. Never over-accessorize. stop looking like a Christmas tree.

The fashion credentials of the British high street have flourished in recent years as more household clothing brands inch onto the catwalks of major fashion centres.

Models strutted in a line through a tiered catwalk of five square compartments at Rihanna’s show, pausing in each to showcase midriff-bearing mesh tops and yellow shift dresses.

Denim tops teamed with slouchy jeans and monochrome dresses with thigh-high slits mirrored the Barbados-born singer’s dressed-down but raunchy style.

“I loved it – it’s so Rihanna, it’s got Rihanna’s name all over it,” Los Angeles model Tolula Adeyemi said in the crowd.

Rihanna, a chart-topping R&B star, has already made a foray into fashion, teaming up with Armani Jeans in 2011.

With Britain facing the prospect of a triple-dip recession, many retailers have been forced to grapple for consumers facing income squeezes. The start of 2013 has seen a number of retail casualties, such as the demise of music retailer HMV.

But fashion industry and marketing experts warn A-list credentials are not always a sure-fire strategy for long-term brand success, and the haute-couture setting of the launch could even alienate Rihanna’s target mass-market high-street audience.

Mary Ellen Muckerman, head of strategy at international brand consultancy Wolff Olins, said it was not hard for celebrities to create buzz.

“The celebrity has a built-in network to get word out and raise the profile of the collaboration very quickly, but what collaborations do struggle with is probably sustainability – how can this not just be 15 minutes of fame,” Muckerman said.

STAR SELLING POWER

The boyish designs are Rihanna’s first with River Island, a clothing chain that traces its history on Britain’s high streets back more than 60 years and is known for its youthful clientele.

The crowd-drawing clothing line between British retailer Topshop and supermodel Kate Moss in 2007 is widely credited with initiating the burst of celebrity lines onto Britain’s high street, paving the way for Madonna and Kylie Minogue.

“Celebrity dressing drives a large part of the industry. If celebrities are wearing it, there is confidence that you and I will want to wear those clothes as well,” said Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council.

British value chain New Look said it attributed sales of just under 3 million pounds ($4.66 million) to its Kelly Brook line in 2012. The retailer reported group sales from its 1,100 international stores at 710.5 million pounds ($1.10 billion) for the first half of 2012.

Clothing retailer N Brown said its line with former England cricketer Freddie Flintoff accounted for around 5 percent of sales for menswear brand Jacamo and had spurred a ripple effect.

“The wider halo effect is what I see as being the real benefit of using a celebrity,” said Paul Kendrick, marketing director at N Brown.

HIGH STREET, HIGH FASHION

London Fashion Week, best known for cutting-edge design, is also hosting upmarket retailer Whistles, as chains increasingly share the runway schedule with up-and-coming designers such as Mary Katrantzou and Holly Fulton.

British Vogue Editor Alexandra Shulman said in the British press this week she viewed the high-street foray into fashion as positive, but warned there was a saturation point.

Wendy Hein, a lecturer in marketing at Birkbeck College, said there was a mismatch between London’s high-fashion catwalks and the high-street label.

“River Island is very much a high-street retail brand and wouldn’t have that much of a connection to high fashion and couture,” Hein said. “I think considering this mix, there’s a danger here in terms of how this is being presented to high-fashion audiences and markets.”

There is a new Nigerian fashion trend sweeping the country’s tattoo parlours – so-called “Pink Lips”.

The process involves young men having their lower lip tattooed with a pink paint so that their lips are no longer a shade of black, but instead – a shade of pink.

The reason behind the procedure may be strange but at one tattoo parlour in Lagos, the owner explains: “We help out those with black lips, to clean their lips and make them pink.”

None of the men would explain to us the reasons why they were getting their lips done in such a fashion, but the main reason seems to be that women find men with pinker lips more attractive (Desmond Elliot, anyone?).

This particular tattoo shop gets up to ten customers a day and does ‘Pink Lips’ for about 7000 Naira ($30)

The owner explains they can also do a shade of red as well.

But it was the battle of the babes at the 70th Annual Golden Globes on Sunday night, as Hollywood stars Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum and Katharine McPhee all competed for the most daring and dazzling ensemble.

Looking every bit as poised and elegant as her mother, the long-limbed first daughter has taken the awkward out of adolescence with ease.

In the weeks since election night, the emerging styles of the Obama daughters, and especially Malia, has taken center stage – the 14-year-old blossoming from the President’s wide-eyed ‘baby’ into a self-assured young woman who has inherited her mother’s confidence, bold fashion sense and looks.

Wearing a shiny blue full skirt from ASOS with a neon pink Zara belt, and J. Crew flats, Malia proved she has inherited her mother’s classic but bold sensibility on election night – seamlessly following in her well-heeled footsteps.

‘The torch has been passed,’ said the designer Gregory Parkinson, who sent out a press release after a recent sighting of the White House’s resident teenager.

Lucky magazine’s executive fashion director, Alexis Bryan Morgan, told USA Today: ‘I’m hard pressed to think of anyone, period, who had such great style potential at 14.

‘She has all the elements that make a great fashionista. It’s really exceptional.’

Malia, standing nearly as tall as her 5-foot-11 mother, now carries herself with confidence, striding alongside her mother like two-peas-in-a-poised-pod.

Unlike many teens unused to their new height, she shows no trace of awkwardness or embarrassment, instead, she embraces her lean figure with smart, yet bang-on-trend, wardrobe choices.

Seventeen fashion director Gina Kelly explained: ‘How her mother dresses is obviously rubbing off on Malia.

Lucky’s Ms Morgan added: ‘She’s smart in that she seems to be aware so many eyes are on her.

‘[But] her style seems very genuine. It doesn’t look like somebody just put something on her on election night. She’s adding her own twist and having fun. You can’t really have style unless you’re being true to herself.’

Since turning 14 on Independence Day, she has slowly started to tick off some age-appropriate milestones – like her first mobile phone.

Mrs Obama admitted in June that she ‘scared the heck’ out of Malia with ‘days of lectures’ on the dangers of talking to strangers before handing the device over.

And although Malia, and her younger sister Sasha, 11, are forbidden from using Facebook until they are 17, Malia seems to be growing up like any other teenager, taking her first daughter responsibilities in her stride.

She has started to wear make-up too – with her mother’s wise counsel to guide her.

In an appearance on The View last year, the First Lady revealed: ‘We do a lot of talking. Sometimes it’s too much.

‘After our… military families tour, I came in, it was 10.30 at night – we were beat, we did four cities in two days, and Malia’s like, “Ma, I need to talk to you.”

‘And it was 10.30 and we talked. And we talked, and we talked. We talked about make-up, actually.’

In fact, it seems the only person struggling with Malia’s coming-of-age is the President himself.

He admitted in an interview last year, before her two-inch growth spurt: ‘Even though she’s 5ft 9in, she’s still my baby. And she just got braces, which is good, because she looks like a kid and she was getting … she’s starting to look too old for me.

One occasion in particular came as a shock, as Mrs Obama revealed on The View.

She said: ‘He says he’s cool, but you know… The first time Malia went out for a party and she was dressed, she had her hair done and she’s tall, she had on a pretty dress, you could see him, he was sort of like… gulp. And I was like, “Easy dad.”‘

President Obama often talks highly of his two children, saying they are kind, respectful, responsible and well-behaved girls.

‘I could not ask for better kids,’ he told ABC News in June. ‘I’m not anticipating complete mayhem for the next four, five years. But I understand teenage-hood is complicated. I should also point out that I have men with guns that surround them often.’

Based on the idea that, “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,” organizers of Canada’s White Ribbon Campaign, a now-global organization helping end violence against women, have arranged the event for four years.

“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ isn’t simply a stunt — it’s a statement about men’s role in ending violence against women; an issue that is connected to strict gender roles and expectations of men. By wearing heels and acting in solidarity with women, we want to show that we’ll do whatever it takes to make this a safer world for everyone,” reads a statement on the White Ribbon Campaign’s site.

If heels were made for walking, you might as well use them for a good cause.

Discussing the fashion line, she gave her thoughts on the Duchess of Cambridge. She told Garraway: ‘I think Kate is very stylish and it’s ridiculous to assume you would wear something once and never wear it again.

Anastasiya Shpagina takes style inspiration from the cartoons and computer animations that have a huge following in Japan, and has even adopted a Japanese name – Fukkacumi.

Anime characters often feature huge eyes and heads that are disproportionately large in comparison to their body, the Daily Mail reported.

The 19-year-old, who is just 5feet 2inches tall, is said to have already slimmed down to just over six stone in her attempts to resemble a living anime character, and spends 30 minutes painstakingly applying her dramatic make-up to each one of her eyes.

It is thought that she may go even further in her efforts to achieve her desired look, with some reports claiming she intends to undergo surgery on her eyes to make her resemble her anime idols even more closely.

The teenager, who has over 10,000 fans on Facebook, also posts videos on YouTube demonstrating how she applies her make-up.
One video, in which Shpagina shows her fans how she achieves her ‘flower fairy’ look, has had more than 150,000 hits.

Shpagina is not the first young girl to take style inspiration from the fantasy world. American Dakota Rose – or Kota Koti – has been dubbed the ‘real-life Barbie’ thanks to her doe-eyed stare and dainty proportions.
